Types of Hose and Cable Reels
The right reel depends on what it holds and how it's used. There are live hose and cable reels - for use with liquids and electric current, and then there are storage only reels to hold and protect hose and cable when not in use. Understanding these differences is the first step toward selecting the right model.
Hose Reels
Live hose reels are built to safely handle a variety of fluids under pressure. Key considerations include:
- Hose Quality: Always use hose rated for pressure, temperature, and chemical compatibility.
- Application: Fueling, chemical transfer, water supply, washdown, firefighting, food/beverage, lubrication/grease, air, hydraulics, welding, corrosive chemicals, and more.
Cable Reels
Live cable reels are designed for safe handling of electrical or communication lines. Important factors include:
- Cable size and requirements: Correct number of conductors, connectors, amperage, and voltage required for the job or task.
- Code compliance: Be sure to follow all local electrical codes.
Storage Reels
Storage reels provide protection and portability. Fluid or current does not pass through until hose or cable is unwound and connected to an electric or fluid source. Storage reels are best suited for:
